ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT’s rocky history is well known. Loved by critics and its fans, it fought to derive an audience, and its final season was a short affair. However, the promenade from the shows premier (included uncensored and expanded along with the aired version) to its conclusion (and, YES, it has a conclusion) is hilarious and worth many returns. There are so many jokes and resonating gags that multiple viewings are REQUIRED, but your first visit to the world of the outrageous Bluth family will be a reward for outlandish viewers.

Here are three seasons of laughs. The series begins with the arrest of the Bluth patriarch and continues as the clan’s only responsible member, Michael (portrayed by Jason Bateman), tries to maintain the family’s business afloat while his mother, siblings, and other family members selfishly grab for every freebie and dollar. His mother, Lucille, is a frosty, controlling alcoholic whose loyalty to her family keeps her one step from pure villainy. His siblings include an older brother, Gob, a magician (of miniature skill), a younger brother, Buster, a mama’s boy who eventually loses a body fraction to a foul seal, and a sister whose marriage is … complicated. Throw in a long-suffering son infatuated with his cousin and an uncle who is the twin of his father, and you can look how complicated Michael’s life becomes.

Not your average family, not your average TV comedy (this is NOT a sitcom performed live in front of a studio audience but is filmed more like a documentary with the camera floating around like an unseen voyeur — deem the mature comedy series SOAP updated a la THE OFFICE) . The jokes advance expeditiously and angry. It’s all absurd and incredibly bright.

For the relate, the series is presented widescreen, and there are deleted scenes and audio commentaries for selected episodes. To command you the truth, I haven’t even skimmed these extras, but I have watched the series in its entirety far too many times to squawk without embarrassing myself. It’s too unpleasant that ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT didn’t do the ratings distinguished to retain it afloat, but it has more laughs than comedies that lasted twice as long.

I arrived behind to this dance. I don’t really have any structure to my TV viewing, other than Sunday nights on HBO. Despite reading definite reviews and hearing accolades for this expose I missed the entire broadcast season. What that means to me is that I’ve unbiased immersed myself in probably the funniest 22 episodes of broadcast comedy ever (that includes Seinfeld and the traditional Dick Van Dyke note) . This first season is chock bulky of running gags, absurd situations and some of the funniest deadpan dialog deliveries ever recorded on video. It’s impossible to single out a cast member because they all build primary contributions, even the guys who journey on for a line or two. Watching them in sequence does absorb some continuity of anecdote but you’ll acquire yourself returning to some special favorites. The bring your daughter to work episode brings out the absurdity of the whole practice while delivering some of the best laughs of the whole series. Seize THIS!!!

With tongue planted so firmly in cheek as to be in grief of serious injury, Barry Sonnenfeld situation out to surpass his hold 5 year venerable triumph with Men in Shaded II. He didn’t quite definite the ticket area by MiB, but he came mighty closer than I ever understanding he could.

Clearly, the goal of the MiB2 cast and crew was to expand the best elements of the first movie and lose those bits which didn’t work so well. They had a mammoth conception and implemented it well, but I mediate that they may have gone fair a tad too far in paring the sage and script down. MiB2 is a tremendous sprint, from the first frame to the last, and rarely have I seen 90 minutes go by so posthaste. A microscopic too fleet, as it turned out.

This flick is even more densely packed with one-liners, funny humor, visual puns and delightfully cynical satire than the first. It opens with a segment from a no-budget TV series on queer and unexplained phenomena (hosted by Peter Graves, of course) describing how the Earth narrowly escaped destruction in 1978 when we were caught between Serleena, a distinguished and disagreeable alien, and the object of her desire, a mysterious force known as the Light of Zartha. At that important juncture 25 years ago, a super-secret government agency (which licenses and polices alien activity on Earth) kept us out of the line of fire by refusing the Zarthans’ inquire of to shroud the Light on Earth.

Cut to the display day and Serleena’s benefit. Naturally. She’s serene looking for the Light of Zartha and she’s severely POed that she hasn’t found it yet. Arriving on Earth undetected, her first scrape is the same faced by the galactic cockroach in MiB: come by a disguise that will pass among the primitve humans. As a shape shifting nest of snake-like apendages, though, she had an easier time of it than the 20 foot Bug. Almost immediately, she comes accros a magazine initiate to a chunky page Victoria’s Secret ad and before you can say “impress fresh Edgar suit”, she’s taken the construct of Lara Flynn Boyle . . . in nothing more than Victoria’s best murky lingerie. This is one risky alien.

Actually, Boyle does a friendly job of filling Vincent D’Onofrio’s shoes. She’s a smarter (if less evil) villain than the Bug and before long has save J and K at a serious disadvantage by completely taking over MiB headquarters.

Ah yes, Jay and Kay. Let’s face it: the dependable key to the success of Men in Gloomy was the hillarious juxtaposition of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. Well, Kay is succor and the chemistry has lost very tiny zing in the 5 years it was on the shelf. it turns out that the erstwhile Agent K is the only human being who might possibly know how to bag the Light of Zartha. Unfortunatly, he’s tranquil got a 35 year gap in his memory and is working as the Postmaster of a exiguous town in Maine. Zed dispatches J to bring him relieve and collect him de-neuralized, post haste.

I won’t give away any more of the residence than this; it’s thin enough as it stands and I wouldn’t want to spoil what few surprises there are. Fortunatly, the movie isn’t really about the situation, now is it? it’s about the gags, the special effects and watching Smith and Jones have *way* too noteworthy fun. Several other characters from the first flick also return, including Tony Shalhoub as the occaisionaly headless pawnbroker Jeebs, the four ungrateful worm guys and the wisecracking, karaoke singing pug, Frank.

Go perceive it, it’s a hoot. The humor is a bit more juvenile than in the first movie, perhaps, but it really doesn’t suffer noteworthy for all of that.

I really enjoyed Men in Dismal. I conception the relationship between J & K (Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones) was unbelievable. Tommy plays a fantastic straight man to Smith’s zaniness.

I went to scrutinize Men in Dark II last week, and I found that it fit like a thoroughly passe, but unruffled kind of comfortable glove. It’s nowhere arrive as superior as the first one, and it suffers from recycling too many of the jokes as well. The talking dog returns in a noteworthy more prominent role, the worms are relieve as well and have more to do. While silly (listening to the dog reveal Gloria Gaynor is hilarious), ultimately they don’t work as well in expanded roles. It feels almost like running the joke into the ground. A worthy more successful return is the ever-wonderful Tony Shalhoub as Jeebs. He’s in for one scene, but he’s mild tall.

Lara Flynn Boyle completely fails, in my notion, as Serleena. First, she doesn’t play menacing very well. Secondly, she doesn’t seem to handle the wry humour and the quips that a villain in a narrate like this requires. She comes across as very flat. Thankfully, Rip Torn is fantastic, and Jones and Smith accelerate into their comfortable roles very easily. They really obtain the movie.

The film is very short (88 minutes), which also tends to accomplish it seem rushed. The characters jump from set to plot without considerable reason. When reason is given, it’s usually very fast so as to travel the spot along to the next area part.

It was a droll film. No doubt about that. It was worth the [money] that I paid for it. Fair don’t go in expecting something as noble as the first one.

I’m a substantial fan of both film noir and commentary tracks, and this disk has the best commentary of any film noir I’ve yet seen. It’s done by Alain Silver, author of several books on noir, and coeditor of the “you gotta have it” book on noir: “Film Noir; An Encyclopedic Reference to the American Style.” I was particularly impressed with the professional production values of the commentary. Silver will mention a key allotment of dialog, and precisely on cue he’ll conclude talking and the sound level of the dialog will arrive up so you can hear what he was talking about. Several times I found myself wondering how they timed things so neatly.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Thieves’ Highway - Criterion Collection! Click Here

Silver does a mammoth job of pointing out the thousand details that form the movie work as a movie, the turns of situation that are typical of film noir, the employ of darkness and shadow, the framing of scenes and placement of the actors, etc., etc.

Other reviewers have build in their vote for the quality of Thieves’ Highway as a compelling and well made movie. I’d like to add my rush for the commentary track. In addition to being darn obliging entertainment, this is a movie that rewards careful examination and thoughtful reflection. Silver’s comments are terrific guide to that reward.

Vultures prey upon the tedious, as they are a necessary section of the ecosystem that helps with environmental sanitization. Humans, however, are a different anecdote, as they prey upon the living, the boring, and sometimes destroy to attain their desired result. The reasons to why a person would go to broad lengths to conclude desired results varies from person to person, but it often has to do with money. Jules Dassin’s fable Theives’ Highway is an illustration of humans and their greed, which appears to be the motivation factor to atomize the compassionate fabric of apt value, ethics, and kindness in the right spirit of film noir.

Unlike film noir Thieves’ Highway opens with Slash Garcos’ (Richard Conte) homecoming during a sunny afternoon accompanied by hearing his father singing in the kitchen. Slash has brought presents to all of his family members and a bundle of money, which he has earned in order to choose down. The money should support Prick come by married to Polly (Barbara Lawrence) and go into business with her father. However, this joyous moment is suddenly halted, as Reduce finds out that his father has lost his legs.

Nick’s father informs him of how he lost his legs, as he had done business with a definite Mr. Figlia (Lee J. Cobb) . The chronicle that Lop hears makes him cringe in madden, as he understands that Mr. Figlia had area up his dad through a dubious view. When Gash heard the whole legend he decides to return to his father’s truck, as the man, Ed Prentiss (Millard Mitchell), who bought it had not yet paid for the truck. However, Sever goes into business with Ed and together they engage up some Golden Appetizing apples that he intends to retract to Mr. Figlia.

The life of a trucker means long hours, deadly and financial dangers, and very microscopic sleep, as life on the road cuts between the driver and their family while they try to obtain a plot to create a buck for their reach and dear. Cut decides that this is what he wants to do, as Ed and he bewitch up two trucks plump of apples in Fresno. The apples are to be taken to the wholesale obtain market in San Francisco, which is described as a 36-hour drive.

In San Francisco the audience gets to follow Cleave on his quest to gain Mr. Figlia, an concept that never seemed to be fully belief through. Eventually he finds him and discovers that he is the man that he suspected him to be, a ruthless businessman that shows no consideration for anyone. The only thing that he seems to care about is the money he makes, which he is not willing to share with.

They Drive by Night (1940) offers a similar cinematic experience as Dassin’s film, as it also depicts the struggles of truck drivers. However, Raoul Walsh’s myth is more glamorous, as the record slowly drifts away from the tough life of being a truck driver. Dassin’s myth focuses on the job and on the characters within the environment in which they exists. They cannot run to a better area, as it is their destiny to be where they are while they have to get the most out of it

A notable side price is that the year after Thieves’ Highway was released Jules Dassin was identified as communist by Edward Dmytryk, which made him blacklisted. As a result Hollywood lost one of their most promising directors and Dassin decided moved to France where he continued to do films. He made ample films such as Rififi (1955) and Never on Sunday (1960) . In the awareness of Dassin being blacklisted the audience gets to experience the films he made prior being blacklisted, which have terrific cinematic value. Thieves’ Highway is one of these films that he left for coming generations to appreciate and ponder.

This is NOT the broken-down Hollywood version released earlier this year, but a great production by the Royal Shakespeare Company a few years ago. I saw this production in England in 1995 and it is truly phenomenal. Alex Jennings is an actor of correct power, forcefully taking on the dual roles of Theseus and Oberon (an piquant, though not exclusive arrive) . Desmond Barritt is absolutely hilarious leading the band of mechanicals. I would HIGHLY recommend this video to anyone, but particularly to those who have seen the play performed by other (particularly American) actors. You will truly have an appreciation for how truly gifted Royal Shakespeare Company actors are.

I was fortunate enough to recognize the stage version of this production (same cast, same director, etc.) when the RSC came to Broadway in spring 1996. I loved the present so powerful that I went to two performances in three weeks.

The video preserves a lot of the most endearing characteristics of the stage show–the double casting (everyone except the four lovers has a “mortal” role and a “fairy” role), the slightly mischievous atmosphere, the mystical world of the fairies. I was espcially joyful to eye that the “forest of light” area wasn’t omitted–just as fair on film as it was live.

The cast here is genuine. A number of the leads are Olivier Award winners, and it’s easy to glimpse why. Alex Jennings (Oberon/Theseus) is a treasure–as Oberon, he is commanding and masterful; and Barry Lynch is an mischievous, sexy Puck. All of the mechanicals are attractive, especially Desmond Barrit as Bottom. Among the lovers, Emily Raymond stands out–she really works to develop Helena into a current and sympathetic character. The actors here actually Employ Shakespeare’s words, instead of reciting them as poetry. How extraordinary that all of these performances were preserved on film!

Buy,Download, Or Stream A Midsummer Night’s Dream! Click Here

Having said that, I was surprised by some of the changes made to the production for this video. For one, why is the young boy included? During a few of the scenes, the camera is so focused on his reactions that the dialogue is pushed into the background. I also missed the modern music–on Broadway, it was sort of Celtic, and the fairies had a resplendent dance in the final scene.

All in all, however, this is a unbelievable film and the best adaptation of “Midsummer” I have seen.

My fiance and I both loved this movie when it was released and we unruffled do. When we heard it was coming out on Blu Ray and on top of that 3-D we were beyond inflamed. Well that excitment was crushed when we got home, build it on and were almost given instant headaches from the venerable school red and blue 3-d glasses and the fact that no matter how hard we tried to perceive it, it objective was nowhere come 3-d quality. We sat there contemplating whether or not it was impartial us or if the 3-d aspect of it sucked that awful and we came to the conclusion that it was definately the latter. So after a half hour of trying hard to like it we switched it to 2-d (thank god for blu ray for having that option) and saw how in 1080p it was almost 3-d itself.

Needless to say the very next day I went benefit to the store I purchased it from and changed it for the regular blu ray version (which was $5 cheaper than the 3-d version and totally worth the take, 5 stars for that version.) It was very dim that it did not work out because such an extraordinary holiday movie with such immense animation would be a no brainer to have as 3-d but unfortunately it honest is not worth the headache and strain.

I went to discover this movie tonight with a mentally handicapped friend - “Michael” — (from a L’Arche home here in Winnipeg, Canada) . We were the first persons in the theatre for the very first evening showing in this city - and we were the last to leave. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves - enchanted by the movie’s subtleties and happily exhausted by its roller-coaster rides.

Time and again, Michael (who is sensitive, compassionate and with a estimable sense of humor) turned to me in the darkness, smiling in appreciation at the accurate same moments I turned to ogle his reactions. Each time this happened, it was at a moment in the film when some limited detail, perfectly captured through agreeable ‘cinematography,’ brought moisture to my normally cynical view, and a warm smile to Michael’s innocent face.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Polar Express! Click Here

Some examples: There is a lone, sad child on this apparent ‘dream train’ to the North Pole - a girl of about ten or eleven years, and like a painting near to life, the miraculous technology at work in this film captures the particular sensibilities of this compassionate, dismal youngster — We eye dinky mannerisms of someone comfortable with herself in a device the other (ten or so) white kids on the mutter are not. And the conclude is profound — the movie audience, including some children of that same age group, went still at such moments in the film.

My friend Michael - who has a ’savant’ genius for perceiving my emotions, and expressing them for me out loud in public — Michael turned to me with a ecstatic smile when the girl on the whisper reaches out to maintain the hands of the poorest boy, sitting alone in the rear compartment; and later, she hugs two other boys, (one of them the central character) — at their final parting. At that moment I held up a finger to my lips to try to hush Michael, but couldn’t prevent him from saying aloud: “She’s such a sweetheart.” There were murmurs of appreciation in the darkness around us, responding to this innocent sentiment.

There is a sublime moment, on the encourage platform of the intelligent stammer — the Northern Lights glimmering in the distance — when the young girl joins in song with the poorest kid on the dispute (a younger boy from a conventional home on the “far side of the tracks”) . I admit to being overcome with emotion during this duet (a heavenly, strong melody with poignant lyrics) - and I blurted out loud to Michael, after the first chorus: “What a fantastic song!” The refrain includes the words “When Christmas comes to town.” [It’s a song so ample that, with some future ‘cover versions’ by serious musicians who could do it justice — this “Christmas Comes to Town” song could, I absorb, deservedly join the little list of legal, Christmas ‘classics.’]

I’d have to agree with anyone who thinks this movie is a miniature short on residence. And yet . . . once you’ve suspended disbelief — beginning with an earth-shattering, Christmas-eve arrival of a steam-puffing, passenger deliver on a small-town Michigan street, directly outside the home of the movie’s central character — once we’ve swallowed that premise, the movie disarmingly embraces the child in us, (including our fears) and our reservations vanish without our noticing.

Just as immense `realistic’ painters, (assume Rembrandt or Vermeer) worked wonders of light & shadow that no mere photograph could ever take, so too this computer-animated marvel takes your breath away through an accumulation of dinky but acute observations that could never be captured by obsolete cinematography. Prime examples from the opening scenes:

A shaft of light illuminates the boy’s bedroom, and he is reflected in a chrome, automobile hubcap leaning against a wall; at once we section his notion — through the keyhole of his bedroom door - we can glance only the backs and the dressing gowns of mother and father, as they say goodnight to the boy’s young sister, after determining the position of her view in Santa’s existence - a opinion no longer shared by the older brother, whose glimpse is at the keyhole.

Later, on the shriek, there’s an stunning end up of the boy’s face, a miniature blemish above the pores on his upper lawful cheek; the `camera’ pans in rotation, capturing perfectly, the texture of the boy’s hair, and that of the young gloomy girl sitting beside him — subtleties of such perfection one wonders if the modern, artistic accomplishment of “Polar Advise” could ever be surpassed.

The film’s last scene, consists entirely of a close-up opinion of a exiguous, silver bell (of the type associated with sleigh rides) with its attached ‘ribbon’ of red leather. The itsy-bitsy bell helps execute the final point about `Belief’ — in things unseen, (or forgotten, and thus inaccessible to some adults) . So simple, so remarkable, so enlightening an image. My friend Michael turned to me at that moment, with a splendid smile. And we fair shook our heads in dread.

—-

Yes, this movie must have SOME shortcomings - one or two moments that don’t quite work as intended by the creators. But fair now, in the afterglow, I can’t bewitch what they were. The film was objective too satisfying an experience!

I’m a 57-year-old grandfather who happens to gain that “The Polar Philosophize” is the first, moral Christmas classic in almost 60 years. Not since the current Kris Kringle “Miracle” movie of 1947, has any film (to my jaded watch) so transcended our secular, commercial views of the Holiday Season, with such uplifting and unusual reminders of the timeless and apt spirit of Christmas.

This is the third DVD release of Kubrick’s masterpiece, and it is composed not given an anamorphic transfer. How can this happen in 2007, considering Warner’s reputation as a studio that cares and the classic location of the film? Astounding. And not a note of any novel extras or bonuses except the trailer we’ve seen before. A broad boo to Warner! Words fail.

As great as I be pleased a original release of this classic film, I am at a loss to understand why they would give it a widescreen treatment and not enhance it for widescreen televisions. All of the two-disc special editions in the current Kubrick boxed space are enhanced, and yet this one (not portion of the location, but released at the same time) is not.
