The DVD mixes historical film with unusual interviews of the people who lived through the civil rights struggle. Blacks and whites. For and against.

One of the most provocative parts for me was to notice Billy Roy Pitts, mature Klansman, discuss how he was ordered to relieve in the execute of Vernon Dahmer in 1966. Why? Vernon was a civil rights and NAACP leader in Mississippi. Vernon was helping people to register to vote by allowing them to register in his store. Billy Roy Pitts tells his narrative. He turned on the Klan and testified against them. He also tells how the Dahmer family visited him in prison, forgave him for killing Vernon Dahmer and asked the Governor to pardon him. He tells how at that time he notion he was doing the moral thing. That interview was worth the sign of the DVD alone. To glance Vernon Dahmer’s widow interviewed. To learn that his 4 sons were away serving in the military at the time their father was being murdered. To settle as a family they would forgive the man that killed their husband and father.

I was born in 1964 in Current York so I missed so grand, and so mighty of this history isn’t taught in schools. There is so remarkable more on these 2 disks.

My exposure to Godard films were through VHS tapes. I was too young to see his 60’s films in their novel formats. The transfer is not too immense but honorable enough. The colors are good, it is thankfully letterboxed, etc. even if there are a few image distortions, artifacts and the sharpness and overall quality leaves a lot of room for improvement. There is something very corrupt, however, with the sound especially towards the fifth chapter (that’s the 5th access in the chapter search of which there are only 6 - thanks to Fox/Lorber!) Thankfully, this is a subtitled film (can’t be switched off/on, they’re pasted on the camouflage) otherwise, even the French won’t understand the French dialogue. The noise distortion is bad, but could it be Godard’s deliberate arrangement to boom sound since it is the portion in which the CB radios or walkie-talkies were being broken-down in the scene? My impression is that the technician in charge was probably asleep or didn’t care when this noise distortion was taking site and the DVD didn’t go through quality control which could have fixed it. I haven’t seen the unusual so I don’t know but since this is a Godard film, anything goes. But then the distortion continued even after that scene so any reasoning to defend Fox’s negligience on this matter proved futile. I found it terribly distracting and I understanding it pulled down the quality all the more of this already mediocre DVD transfer. Is this the best version yet? How does the VHS version rate? Fox/Lorber is hit and miss with DVDs. They did agreeable with Seven Beauties, Last Year at Marienbad, and the already LD Criterion-restored Umbrellas of Cherbourg and 400 Blows but did very poorly with A Woman is a Woman, several Truffaut films and even the relatively current Padre Padrone. What a shame that a company like Fox/Lorber gets the rights to release these expansive Foreign films but doesn’t have the interest to near up with quality transfers. I contemplate this is a ruin of our hard-earned money to pick the DVDs that they obtain. Next time you bewitch from Fox/Lorber, read the reviews… otherwise honest rent or wait for a better re-release in the future.

I saw a print of this film in NYC in the slow 80s. It was pristine, bright and a gigantic experience. Along with Truffaut, Godard epitomized the French Fresh Wave of the ’50s and ’60s, and this film along with “Woman is a Woman,” was one of his best. The employ of color is extraordinary. Sadly, the source print for this DVD is oddly washed out, contains a few tears and pops in the sound track. It’s hard to bear there wasn’t a better copy available for Fox Lorber to utilize.

MTV wanted to branch out in the 1990s and net away from music programming. In particular, they wanted to design unhurried night programming for a young adult audience. The result was a collection of tantalizing shows collectively known as Liquid Television. Aeon Flux originally got its open as a series of spicy short films on Liquid T.V. in 1992. It was a clever mix of dialogue-less wall-to-wall action and an moving science fiction premise that was well-liked enough to spawn a ten-episode series in 1995.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Aeon Flux - The Complete Animated Collection! Click Here

Chung has digitally remastered all of the episodes and they have never looked or sounded better. The colours are worthy more vibrant and the animation style more clearly defined with shadows fleshed out creating an even more cinematic vibe. What is so striking about Aeon Flux is that it refuses to appeal to the lowest well-liked denominator. It features very intricately plotted and complex stories and sneaks in all sorts of fantastical creations (including spider-like robots and deadly genetically engineered assassins with four arms), suggestive sexual references and the level of violence that you wouldn’t procure on regular television. Along with The Maxx and The Head, Aeon Flux was adventurous programming for the alternative nation. It was produced at a time when alternative culture was making serious inroads into the mainstream and it is doubtful that we will watch its likes again from MTV.

The first two discs feature several audio commentaries with creator Peter Chung and key creative crew members (including the stammer of Aeon Flux herself, Denise Poirier) . However, most of them are stupid as Chung is not the most eloquent or attractive speaker. He dominates most of the tracks so that everyone else has to fight to catch a word in edge-wise. While it is sure that he is trying to teach his intentions on these tracks they are punctuated with so many “Ums” and “Ahs” that it becomes very annoying to listen past the halfway notice.

The precise extras approach into play on the third disc which features the luminous pilot episode with optional commentary by Chung and music and sound designer Drew Neumann. We are presented with a world that is plagued with a deadly virus as Aeon fights her device to an antidote.

“Aeon Flux Shorts” (again with optional commentary by Chung and Neumann) features Aeon on various missions all of which she dies. In some episodes she lasts to the kill in others, she is killed off at the beginning and this keeps the viewer constantly on edge anticipating how she is going to be killed.

“Investigation: The History of Aeon Flux” takes a examine at how this innovative series originated. Chung had been working on Rugrats and was approached by Liquid T.V. to do a Peep vs. Study type enthralling indicate. He had already been working on the pilot in a rough effect.

“The Deviant Devices of Aeon Flux” examines the various weapons and gadgets that she uses in the present with narration provided by her.

“Production Art” is a collection of sketches, model sheets, storyboards and pencil tests of character designs, props, backgrounds and so on.

“Other Works by Peter Chung” features a promo he did for MTV Loaded, an ad for an Aeon Flux CD ROM and a frigid commercial for the Honda Coupe Mission.

Finally, there is a collection of “Liquid Television Shorts” that appeared on this expose in the `90s.

For those upset about the re-recorded dialogue, here’s an explanation from Aeon Flux creator Peter Chung:

‘There are places where we recorded recent dialogue; I brought aid the writers who worked on the recent expose and we wnet over the scripts and tweaked the dialogue again, and in some cases brought it abet to what it originally was supposed to be because MTV had asked us to change it and the version that was on the air was actually something that did not deem our unusual intentions anyway. So I know that people who assume themselves purists will say “why did you tamper with it? We want the new version.” Well, the version that was on the indicate was not the unique version, you know - that’s the version that MTV tampered with. So what you’re getting on the DVD is something that’s closer to what [we originally intended].’

I’m so cheerful this is finally available on DVD! Hopefully the remaining episodes will be coming out soon as well. This is one of my celebrated TV shows - involving to both children and adults, and with a wonderful combination of action, humor and thoughtfulness. Reliable, trim family viewing with a true to each episode meets knights, dragons & life in a medieval castle.

The premise is that 13 year outmoded Jane has decided to become a knight rather than a lady-in-waiting. No one takes her seriously until a dragon shows up, and Jane is the one who saves the day, becoming best friends with Dragon in the process. Each episode involves either some original knight-in-training challenge, or sometimes unbiased life around the castle. The characters are nicely fascinating (this is done by WETA, the folks who did the effects for the Lord of the Rings and Narnia movies, so you know it’s righteous!) and their personalities well developed.

As seen on NBC, Jane and the Dragon: A Dragon’s Myth is a children’s DVD collection showcasing the first five episodes of a favorable children’s spicy series based on author Martin Baynton’s best-selling children’s books. Brought to life with Weta Workshop’s resplendent, three-dimensional computer animation - so advanced as to expose the fluid movement of Jane’s fiery red hair and the natural creep of characters’ clothing - Jane and the Dragon: A Dragon’s Record stars a spunky, twelve-year-old heroine who wasn’t relate simply to grow up to be a lady-in-waiting. She dared to face a fearsome dragon and rescue Prince Cuthbert; her bravery earned her special permission from King Caradoc to start training as a knight’s apprentice. At the beginning of the first episode, Jane is already working hard at her training, and has formed a mercurial friendship with the witty and easygoing Dragon - but her first test to be generous of her chosen path as a future knight looms huge! Other episodes prove the plight of Jane’s friend the Jester challenged to a duel of honor by a grand larger, stronger, and more experienced opponent; the difficulties Jane must face in learning to work as a team with her fellow squire; and her personal troubles when her mother forbids her to support the castle ball as a knight, stipulating that she must wear a gown or not go at all. Expedient convey acting, racy visuals beneficial of the theater veil, and incandescent writing definite to entertain viewers of all ages gain Jane and the Dragon: A Dragon’s Narrative a ample DVD ideal as a gift for dragon lovers of all ages and enthusiastically recommended for school and community library DVD collections for children.

Full House first aired on ABC on September 22, 1987. Widower, “Danny” Danniel Ernest Tanner (Bob Saget) is left to raise his three daughters, “D.J.” Donna Jo Margaret Tanner (Candace Cameron) Stephanie Judith Tanner (Jodie Sweetin) and Michelle Elizabeth Tanner (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen) after his wife, Pam, died in a car accident from a drunk driver. So Danny asks his best friend “Joey” Joseph Alvin Gladstone (Dave Coulier) and his brother in-law Jesse Cochran (John Stamos), but by season two his name changes to Jesse Katsopolis, to abet raise his three girls. It’s like Three Men and a Baby, but instead it’s with raising three young girls. We gape these three dads raise these girls through the trials and errors of parenting. It’s not a normal family, but it’s a blissful one, at least most of the time. Every family has it’s ups and downs.

Added to the bunch, Jesse falls in like with and ends up marrying “Becky” Rebecca Donaldson (Lori Laughlin) and they have twin boys Nicky and Alex (Dylan and Blake Tuomy-Wilhout) . It determined is a “burly house” with lots of worship to go around until May 23, 1995 when the present came to an destroy, but the laughs live on in this DVD situation.

This is a spacious hold! All 192 episodes from all 8 seasons are in this station. There are 16 slim DVD cases, 2 per season. And in each case there are 2 DVDs, making a total of 32 DVDs in the box to store in the Tanner family house.

The DVDs in this station are actually exactly the same as the DVDs sold in the individual season boxed sets. The slim covers for each 2 DVDs in the dwelling, are also the dependable same as the individual seasons sets slim cases.

What’s also astronomical about the DVDs is that they don’t crop out any scenes, like they do when they are on TV. I have noticed many longer scenes that were gash off on TV. Also, the theme song isn’t gash either, until the 7th and 8th season, then the song is cut; otherwise every episode has the entire song play in the beginning.

If you are one who wants to know the lyrics to the theme song “Everywhere You Glance,” here it is:

WHATEVER HAPPEND TO PREDICTABILITY

THE MILK-MAN, THE PAPERBOY, EVENING TV

HOW DID I Come By TO LIVING HERE

SOMEBODY Insist ME PLEASE

THIS WHOLE WORLD CONFUSING ME

CLOUDS AS MEAN AS YOU’VE EVER SEEN

AIN’T A BIRD WHO KNOWS YOUR TUNE

THEN A Diminutive Divulge INSIDE YOU WHISPER

PLEASE DON’T SELL YOUR DREAMS SO SOON

EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK

EVERYWHERE YOU GO

THERE’S A HEART (THERE’S A HEART)

A HAND TO Bear ONTO

EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK

EVERYWHERE THERE’S A PLACE

OF SOMEBODY WHO NEEDS YOU

EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK

WHEN YOU’RE LOST OUT THERE AND ALL ALONE

A LIGHT IS WAITING TO CARRY YOU HOME

EVERYWHERE YOU Sight

EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK

I was listening to the song while writing down the lyrics. After several hearings of it, hopefully I got most of the lyrics good, but anyways, this is very conclude to the right words in the song.

It’s gigantic to gape with the family and you never have to grief about leaving your child gaze this display alone. It may not be a classic, but it certain entertains, but more for those young ones between the ages of 8-12. However, I have plenty of memories watching this indicate as a child, and I smooth savor it.

Every episode has a life lesson to be learned. I reflect many viewers can describe to the characters’ and their problems. I mediate that is why it stayed on TV for 8 years, even though I know the first season didn’t do too well, at least those other seasons gradual it helped hold it on.

The languages spoken in the box site is unprejudiced English. As for subtitles for the series, well, it varies. I did check each of the seasons, but not each DVD, what the subtitles are, but I’m stunning determined that the subtitles from disk one in season one is the same for disk four for season one and the same goes for the rest of the seasons. Please let me know if this is erroneous, or if I examine that it isn’t in any of the seasons and disks, then I’ll update this review. Anyways, seasons one through three have English, French, and Spanish subtitles. Seasons four through five have French and Spanish. Season six has no subtitles, and seasons seven through eight have fair English subtitles for the hearing impaired. I’m not determined why the subtitles are not the same for each of the seasons.

Extras In This DVD Set:

Season 1

Disc 1: Bonus: Recent Unaired Pilot, Commentary by Jeff Franklin (creator of the reveal) for episode 1: Our Very First Show

Disc 2: Bonus: House of Trivia Fast-Fact Version of The Miracle of Thanksgiving

Disc 4: Commentary by Jeff Franklin for episode 21: Aroused Money

Season 2

Disc 4: Special Features: Top Ten Rules of Parenting and Burly House Trivia Challenge

Season 3

Disc 4: Special Feature: Joey Impersonations: Season 3 Montage

Though the extra features in this station are substantial, I wish there were more.

If you are an avid “Paunchy House” fan and/or a “child of the 90’s” who watched the note regularly while it was on the air, then chances are radiant righteous that you have been loyally collecting the DVD’s as they have been released season-by-season (at a remarkably posthaste stagger, I might add) . The individual sets have maintained a very reasonable selling price–no more than $22 or $23 at most places–so if you’ve grown up as a Tanner fan, then these have probably been tough to pass up.

Now, of course, if you’ve purchased the first 6 seasons and are patiently waiting for the last two, now you have another decision to invent. Will you simply acquire seasons 7 and 8 individually once they arrive out, or will you cave in to this deluxe full-series edition that has been penciled in for a November 2007 release? For some, it will be worth placing on your Christmas list this year, but for others, they will have no plight keeping the sets that they have already begun collecting. When these DVD companies go for the tantalizing “complete series” gift sets that are treated to more efficient packaging and (sometimes) garnished with some current special features, it’s basically a matter of preference–and in many cases, it’s tough to say no.

As for me, I am glad with the season sets that I have now, and I am looking forward to picking up the last two, so I don’t concept on shelling out over $200 for this (partly because I also have my contemplate on a similar release being planned for “Gilmore Girls”) . However, if you appreciate “Fleshy House” and deem you would bask in owning this, then it looks like it might be a decent investment. Again, the specifics on the bonus features are quiet unknown, and although I personally don’t seek information from that they’ll add anything current for this collection, I state anything is possible. Some things to inspect for, though, include a appreciate episode guide, cast photos from over the years, and things along those lines.

If you’re reading this, then you most likely know the premise of this explain, but in short, it is a sweet, simple, and deliciously saccharine record of a widowed father who enlists in the attend of his best friend and rock-n-rollin’ brother-in-law to encourage him raise his three daughters, who ranged from infancy to age 10 when the series premiered in 1987. You’ve got superachieving oldest daughter DJ, perky middle child Stephanie, and the ever-adorable (yet occasionally bratty) Michelle, the “baby of the family,” if you will, whose cute smile and professionally scripted find phrases (believe “You got it dude” and “Whoa baby”) made young actresses Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen a considerable staple in the show’s success.

Beyond the antics and plights of the growing Tanner kids, “Bulky House” maintained the attention of its target audience by producing sensitively written stories, with a twinge of humor and family-oriented messages sprinkled in each 30-minute episode. The three leading men (played by Bob Saget, John Stamos, and Dave Coulier) always worked well together, and as a slew of original characters gradually found their procedure into the space, the charm was never lost.

Let’s face it, though–there are a lot of people who will gladly bewitch any opportunity they can gain to bash this note, and if you’ve watched any of the episodes, you can probably guess what they don’t like. The expedient news, however, is that given the impressive 8-year accelerate that “Elephantine House” achieved–as well as the plentiful television reruns and considerable success in DVD sales–the critics’ understanding fair doesn’t matter. If you have enjoyed this point to, then the soupy status threads and themes of family unity are probably suitable up your alley. There’s no reason to be ashamed of it; this was a big series, filled with memorable performances, a youthful spirit, and a valid wholesomeness that you can proudly inspect with the whole family. It’s nice that there is mild something out there that children can see–something that can send out a determined message, reminding them that those popular human values are peaceful significant.

With that being said, if the opinion of having “Beefy House” immortalized on DVD sounds excellent to you, then you might want to attach up for this area. Even if you’ve started buying the other sets and fair like the understanding of having this special edition collector’s item, then go ahead–start setting aside your money, or ask for it when Christmas rolls around (hard to bear that time of year is arriving once again) . Either map, this is a point to that is certainly worth remembering, and if you’re looking for something that satisfies your need for both humor and poignancy, there is perhaps nothing that fits the bill better than this!

I have to admit that this movie moved me on many levels. After getting over the initial shock of what is, for very beneficial reason, considered to be not honest a violent film but also a very disturbing one in terms of subject - this movie I am convinced is destined to become a cult classic. As mentioned previously, Battle Royale is an unforgiving movie but like all tall films there are pockets of resistance and liberation. This exceedingly disturbing and deeply saddening film about watching young kids killing each other out of a primal need to survive should disturb anyone with a shred of humanity left in them. What should be distinguished is that in this case of art imitating life it opens up a portal of consideration of how people may react in this type of state and the inherent complexity contained therein.

No matter what critics say about its violence Battle Royale is really a tale about character. Based on the fresh by Takami Koshun, Battle Royale is intelligent on many. One blueprint to witness the movie is in terms of a not so distant future Japan (which is this case can stand in as a metaphor to other countries) where the government’s trepidation about rampant juvenile delinquency and the a lost generation’s blatant disregard for order and the rule of law has caused it survey more immediate and less creative ways to deal with the dilemma, the solution: the systematic annihilation of teenagers. In this case, selected groups of high school kids are deceived and carted of to an undisclosed spot, given weapons and supplies and a mission - to demolish each other. In an orgy of blood and gore the last person standing is allowed to go home. This, at least for me, brings up two very difficult questions: Is it a yarn about extermination or discipline? If it is, what possible aid can be derived from this?

Returning fleet to the swear of “character,” it is exciting to explore how director Kinji Fukasaku and writer Kenta Fukasuka bring Takami Koshun’s original to the hide. It is also spellbinding to peep how director Fukasaku controls a herd of cats in a powerhouse cast of 40+ characters that includes Beat Takeshi’s rendition of Kitano as well as the portrayal of Shuya (Tatsuya Fujiwara), Noriko (Aki Maeda), Shougo (Taro Yamamoto), Kazou (Masanobu Ando), Mitsuko (Kou Shibasaki) and Takako (by Waste Bill’s Chiaki Kuriyama) . I was intrigued to seeing how some of the characters reacted to stressful situations that in some places (unless you contemplate the film at least twice) are lost around the films central motif of crude ruthlessness and violence.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Battle Royale: Director’s Cut! Click Here

Needless to say that despite the films unsuitable cinematography and primitivistic tendencies - it being area in a tropical island and all - not to mention the almost mandatory erotic undertones, it is more than anything, a movie about a society on the verge of imploding. It is well-known that Fukasaku’s motivations for making the movie transcend politics and society. Dilemma: if your survival rested on you killing your best friends, would you do it? This is the circumstance in Battle Royale and it is a very intriguing one. This brutal premise and what happens next is inevitably - a very cruel film. Fukasaku rendition has a Lord of the Fliesesque quality about it. I cannot stress how expansive a movie this is though. Overall, this is one of the most belief provoking, disturbing, and worthy films released. I was not surprised that this film has not been released in the US but unprejudiced like the saga of “RINGU” - my guess is that inevitably this film will be hijacked as well - it is the Hollywood design.

Another “layer” to be uncovered from this blood-soaked saga is how Fukasaku calls to seek information from a Japanese society whose rage over youth delinquency (as mentioned previously) and has gone so far to imagine a `final solution.’ If it was Fukasaku’s intent, it got me thinking that if such a solution were establish in station the results would be a fight to the death will be a traumatized, excited and extremely mentally agile mind would be released encourage on society - making the pickle doubly worse - as if the society is cultivating violence. In Battle Royale Fukasaku is concept provoking again in that he allows for pockets of resistance and moments of female empowerment. The sub-plot of hacking in to the system and destroying the whole game and the scenes with Mitsuko (Kou Shibasaki) although not current add a particular liberating quality to the film. However there detached is lingering the disturbing theme of Battle Royale, dealing as it does with the corollary of a system of violence transferred from generation to generation thus perpetuating a cycle of violence. In the destroy, the hub of the Battle Royale films is that violence without doubt impacts children. Is this what we want as a future for them? A wild, sexy, and view provoking film that begs to be watched more than one time to be fully appreciated.

Very suitable movie. I strongly reccomend this movie to anyone who enjoys curious movies, because you’ve never ever seen a movie like this.

It’s the future… Kids have stopped going to class, and are becoming pests. So the government has started a recent program called the “BATTLE ROYALE SURVIVAL PROJECT.” What happens is that one class of 9th graders a year is chosen by unbiased lottery to go onto a deserted island. The kids then bag ‘voted off’ the island. And by ‘voted off’ I mean they waste each other. Each kid gets a bag, inside is food, water, a draw, and a random weapon. With this weapon, they are ordered to demolish each other until one remains.

This movie has everything. Violence, spot, character development (somewhat — enough to satasfy me), and an astonishing epic. It’ll support you on the waste of your seat, or couch, or whatever.

Oh, and if you go out and explore the novel Tarantino movie, Ruin BILL, the actress that plays Liu’s bodyguard is one of the kids from Battle Royale.

Buy this movie. I can’t stress it enough.

The review I read in the USA Today suggested that this movie was a stinker. But I assume the critics dropped the ball. This was a fun movie, and a tall choice for the whole family. Evan Baxter is the used Buffalo news anchor who has objective been elected to Congress with the lofty campaign slogan “Change the World.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Evan Almighty! Click Here

This inspires God (played by Morgan Freeman) to jabber to Evan about building an ark. God is inflamed that the glowing Appalachian mountain vistas he has created are being destroyed by those desiring to gain sizable residential areas. He is upset with those who want to ruin the natural beauty of the world.

Animals originate following Baxter around two by two, and (like in the Tim Allen flick “The Santa Clause”) he begins to watch like his predecesor (Noah) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream Evan Almighty! Click Here

Evan becomes alienated from his congressional colleagues and from his family, but by this point in the film, he is convinced that he is doing the work of the Lord.

As the residence unfolded, I started wondering, “Were the animals really important to the storyline, since the judgment of God was only falling on one location of the world rather than the entire planet? ” But my wife told me that having the animals advance to Evan from around the world demonstrated to the people that Evan wasn’t crazy, and that this truly was a travel of God.

Secondly, having the animals reach to Evan ties this in neatly with the Noah epic from Genesis 6.

The movie is not what I would call laugh out loud silly, but there are plenty of cute and heartwarming moments. The message of the film seems to be that we can change the world with one random act of kindness at a time. Both the message and the movie are winners in my book. Recommended.

Evan Almighty was not nearly as unpleasant as reviews and earlier comments from some made it out to be, but also no where come as expansive as Bruce Almighty was. Both borrowed from the Oh God! series, which borrowed from earlier stories, etc. Though I gave the movie 4 stars in my rating, it’s probably more like a 3.5 star movie (out of 5) . Fetch it in the suitable spirit (no pun intended here) and you may believe it a 4 star film. Go in with overly high expectations and you’ll probably be thinking that 3 stars was helpful.

Evan Almighty was more formulaic, but mild offered up a cute myth that is moving enough if you go in with reasonable expectations. If you are expecting greatness, then yes, you’ll be disappointed, but if you can gain a touching legend that gets (if you’ll pardon the pun) flooded over with special effects, then you could devour this movie.

Much more family salubrious than was Bruce Almighty, though Bruce Almighty worked better as a comedy because of that while Evan Almighty works better for family entertainment.

This movie looked dazzling honorable on HD DVD. Combo disc format so you can play the movie on standard DVD if primary (flipper disc, DVD on one side, HD DVD on the other) .

I started out thinking the movie was probably best as a rental, but enjoyed it enough to go serve and reconsider purchasing. If you can net this one on sale (under $20) it is probably worth adding to your collection. If you are seeing higher prices, wait for a sale perhaps, or try finding a nice archaic copy from one of the associated sellers.

Clayton (Stephen Dorff), the crime boss who hired them to kill his wife and unborn child, is a truly psychotic animal. The problem is, Rose is dying of cancer and wants to leave something good behind. And she believes it will be this child.

Lee Daniels directed the movie as well as MONSTER’S BALL, another ethnic thriller that slammed audiences with sex and violence and gave Halle Berry the chance to win an Academy Award. Helen Mirren starred in the PRIME SUSPECT seasons on the BBC as well as THE QUEEN. Cuba Gooding, Jr. has been in several movies, including JERRY MAGUIRE, MEN OF HONOR, and SNOW DOGS. Stephen Dorff starred in BLADE and COVERT ONE: THE HADES FACTOR.

The film showcased developing characters and a telescoped plot that spread over years. Viewers are forced to read between the lines on some of the continuity, and to make judgment calls where the characters and action are concerned. The fascinating thing about the film is the dichotomy of how caring and how cold-blooded Rose and Mikey are, and the horror of Vickie’s situation, never truly able to take care of herself or her child. Normally a film like this carries the views along on action alone, but there was a depth of character that allowed for fascination to set it. I simply couldn’t stop watching to see how things came out, and on more than one occasion I didn’t see a twist coming till it slammed me between the eyes.

There is a lot of sexuality, nudity, and violence in the movie, but it’s genuine and real. Not gratuitious. This is a world of violent people, and it’s presented with the carnality that’s in that world.

SHADOWBOXER is a different kind of crime film. It has a lot of film noir elements, but they’re presented in a different mix. If you liked A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, you’ll probably enjoy SHADOWBOXER.

Lee Daniels (Monster’s Ball, The Woodsmen) doesn’t seem to know what to do with this script of a story by William Lipz that has so many incongruities that it simply becomes a muddled mélange of criminal psychology, sociological misfits, and ruminations on the presence of a greater meaning to all the wild madness that eventually drowns the characters. One wonders why such enormously gifted actors such as Helen Mirren and Cuba Gooding, Jr. ever accepted roles if they read the script beforehand.

A very mature and cancer-ridden Rose (Helen Mirren, who can truly make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear!) is a professional assassin who has raised Mikey (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) to be her co-assassin as well as her very young lover. The two function well as a team and succeed in making a handsome living by killing people to whom they are assigned by a wheelchair-ridden broker. But when one of the marks is big time crime boss Clayton (Stephen Dorff at his most buff to date, eye candy persona) and his wife Vickie (Vanessa Ferlito), all goes well until Rose faces the problem that Vickie is pregnant, a fact that seems to create a sense of guilt and loss and causes her not only to spare her and also to deliver the male child. After calling in a corrupt doctor Dr. Don (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and is lover/nurse Precious (Mo’Nique) to help them out, Rose and Mikey harbor the new mother and child and sequester themselves to raise the child, a life style that allows Mikey to continue his assassin jobs while Rose finds happiness raising the young boy. But of course eventually the evil Clayton disrupts the flow of goodwill, gains information from the Precious after an adulterous office tryst, and it is face to face between Clayton and his wife and son and Rose and Mikey. The ending defies sharing, not only because it would mar the viewer’s watching, but it borders on surrealistic bizarre images that are of questionable taste.

During all of this convoluted story we are given flashbacks that attempt to fill in the interstices in the plot: Mikey’s relationship to his father, his first killing, Rose’s introduction into crime etc. Granted there are some moments of quiet and beauty in all of this mess, but the true reason for sitting through it is the always satisfying presence of Helen Mirren (who actually gets us to believe her preposterous character and motivation) and Cuba Gooding, Jr. (who needs to change agents to get roles more important and conducive to his gifts). With so many fine stories waiting to be made into film one wonders why drivel such as this makes it to the screen on time! Grady Harp, November 06
